Our Guidance and Counseling Department here at Community Health Academy of the Heights seeks to positively impact the lives of our students by working with parents and faculty and local community organizations.  Our program offers comprehensive planning and guidance services addressing our students’ academic and career goals while meeting their social and emotional needs.

Our guidance counselors at CHAH are Ms. Beckles (6th-8th grade), Ms. Chimilio (9th-10th grade) and Mr. Bowen (College and 12th grade).

Our Guidance Department functions as a resource of information and advice for our students and their families.  We actively communicate with admissions offices at colleges and universities our students are interested in attending to help those institutions understand our students’ accomplishments and the rigors of our academic curriculum.

Ultimately, we work to provide students with the opportunities to acquire the educational and social competencies for them to grow into effective, responsible citizens for a diverse and changing world.

CHAH is fortunate to have two full time on-site Social Workers, Ms. Jeanniton and Ms. Velez. Students are given space and time to share their voices, and because of this we know our students better, we understand their challenges, and we have a strong team of individuals who are closely monitoring their emotional states. We know our students who require close medical attention, we know our students who are experiencing challenges in the home, and we know our students who just need help feeling more comfortable in their own skin. We look forward to continuing and expanding this work, and truly appreciate New York City’s attention toward the mental health of our students.

All high school students receive a mental health awareness workshop and complete a mental health status survey. Students are then connected to services and resources based on their needs.

Here at CHAH, we believe that the health of the individual is vitally important to the health of the community, and that their mental health is the cornerstone of our collective well-being.  We are grateful that New York City and the Department of Education continue to support our mission by allowing us to provide these psychological services to our students and their families.
