CHAH Art Students Featured at MoMA!
/This year we have not one but two CHAH students featured in the MoMA Manhattan Borough Arts Festival. Although traditionally the work was hung up at the MOMA for a week, with a reception, they now will be holding a virtual Art show in June. Students will still receive an award. The Students are Kayla Hidalgo, 9th grade and Scarline Martinez, 12th grade.

Kayla Hidalgo, 9th grade
"Recover"

As I was creating this piece, I wanted to show synthesis. Synthesis is the combination of ideas to form a theory or system. The two ideas I was inspired by and used were pop art and cubism. I showed pop art by using different types of colors to show contrast. I used different shapes that are used in my artwork which shows cubism. I want viewers to understand there is more to my subject matter than meets the eye. The subject matter for my artwork is Rihanna. I chose her because not only is she known for her vocals but also Rihanna is well known for her involvement in humanitarian causes.
Some new understandings and skills that I gained in making this piece was using my principles of design to create contrast within the colors. This helped me create a sense of unity and rhythm throughout my whole painting. With this I created some patterns as well. While completing my artwork I had difficulty finding colors that create contrast with the colors that they are next to. I chose acrylic paint because it’s a good medium that has different types of of solid colors and I wanted the artwork to be bold. I think that I can apply this into future pieces because now I know that the principles of design I use can connect in a sort of way to make a more successful artwork. I also sketched this smaller and then used a projector to enlarge it onto a bigger scale. Over all I think I learned a lot doing this piece and now it can help me do better on the next piece I do, incorporating my knowledge of principles of design and using technology like a projector to improve my artwork.

"Rebirth"

During the Renaissance era art was often centered on a largely homogeneous ethnicity making them the celestial race. With my piece I wanted to introduce the presence of blackness and diversity into renaissance style work. I wanted to paint a renaissance from the perspective of a minority with the intention of presenting a more inclusive renaissance. With this I intended to account for the obvious lack of ethnic diversity that existed during that era and present day.
During the creation of this piece I learned more about color mixing and making skin tones. I gained the understanding of perfecting my craft by dedicating an intensive amount of time to every little detail. This newly gained skill and understanding will help me create art of high quality in the future and guide me into creating work that demonstrates my understanding of art making.
