Celebrating Lunar New Year!

Our after school literacy club has been learning about Lunar New Year! Over the last few weeks students have read articles on the meaning of the holiday as well as what special foods to eat to bring good luck, wealth, and happiness.

After learning about the meaning of the holidays, students had the opportunity to make a lunar new year craft. They chose between a lantern and two different types of dragons.

The following week students read about special foods people eat on Lunar New Year. They learned how to use chopsticks and got to try a variety of foods: seaweed snacks, dumplings, red bean buns, and pocky. We took a poll: students overwhelmingly loved the pocky as well as the chicken dumplings. However, most students were not a fan of the seaweed snacks. It has been fun learning about different cultures!

Esports are now at CHAH!

Community Health Academy of the Heights is proud to present our first esports team! Thanks to the hard work and dedication from our formal founding members, and coach Ms. Moreno, who helped pave the way for this years middle school esports team. We are now able to compete in the Garden State Esports tournament! There are two Middle School Rocket League Teams who have won their first official game. Come support and watch our matches every Tuesday in room 417!

After-School Literacy Program ... with Pastries!

This is the first year of our after-school literacy program here at CHAH! Before the break, students read about holiday foods around the world. One of the articles they read was about how Christmas foods differ around the world. Students made a list of all the new foods they learned about and compared and contrasted them. Next, they made text-to-self connections by writing about a holiday that is special or important to them. On the last day of the program before our holiday break, students presented their special holiday and then had the opportunity to try some of the foods they read about.

Students go to try Stollen (a German fruitcake) and Panetone (an Italian fruitcake)!

Mercedes Benz Tour

CHAH students visited the Mercedes Benz headquarters this past Tuesday!

They got to meet the president of the Manhattan location. Students also had the opportunity to speak to the heads of the various departments, where they leaned what their day to day role and responsibilities look like. They learned about sales, HR, the Mercedes Benz service center, and marketing.

One student told them all he’ll be back for a test drive!
